The concept of human rights is utterly alien to the Bible. Consider the freedom of religion. Nothing is so bitterly and viciously condemned by the prophets than Israel's "apostasy," i.e., the freedom to worship gods other than Jehovah. Indeed, perhaps the dominant theme of the OT is vituperation of those who practice or even tolerate the worship of other gods.

Excellent article, Ed! I just have one little quibble. In point 4 you say that "human rights are better protected in the US now than in any other time or any other nation. (If you disagree, please name a better nation or time.)" My sense is that human rights are currently more securely protected here in Canada than in the US. We have a robust Charter of Rights and Freedoms in our constitution which is consistently upheld by the courts. Unlike the situation in the US, there is no threat here to rights such as a woman's right to an abortion, other rights of women and minorities, rights of indigenous people, etc.
